‘Heaven, Songs of Matt Kivel’ is a compilation of songs written by Matt and recorded by a handful of his contemporaries/predecessors. "But Matt's not dead!!!" you might say to yourself. "How could he possibly have a non-posthumous compilation record!?? This is an outrage." Well, we urge you to calm down and think about it for a second. "Heaven" explores the notion that modern songs can have a life beyond their original recorded renditions. In today’s musical landscape we listen, and relisten to the same version of a recorded song countless times. But it wasn't always like this! In the not-so-distant past, musical tradition centered around the concept of interpretation, improvisation, and the retelling of a story from a uniquely individual perspective. This tradition of transformative expression is what we hope to channel, in some small way here, with some great contemporary artists reimagining Matt’s original work.
